Someone identified the bug for me as a Forest bug (yes, that is the common name for this particular insect) or Pentatoma rufipes.

Interesting little snippets from the woods Mark, the first looks like an assassin bug to me, there are some varieties that can attack humans although luckily not the ones in the garden here at least.

An entomologist actually identified the bug for me, so I guess that would count as a positive ID

I like those pictures Mark - great details. I think the bug shot is especially good with the back ground of trees.

I would not be at all surprised if the Australian version of this bug could fell a buffalo with one nip .

Yeah no problem with the ID by the entomologist Mark, here I think a similar type are just generically called assassin bugs, they come in a range of sizes (I’ve seen them here on trees in the garden) and eco niches, some probably stab and suck on fruit, some feed on other insects and still others on sap, but one type attacks spiders and that one has my blessing, it can stab and suck on spiders till the cows come home for all I care.

I guess you're like me Birma, not liking spiders, the impact at the mention of spiders is far greater than the reality, I actually don't have any trouble from them, I know Murray has seen the odd Tarantula over at his place (they dig a hole in the garden and eat small dogs and things) kidding, but he has seen them. We don't have any large aggressive spiders in my suburb, or I have never seen any, just a few daddy long legs and the occasional small garden types here and there, oh and the occasional huntsman that eats cockroaches, (not dangerous...apparently) and that's about it. I do remember someone saying they had red-backs (black widows) nesting, but that was a long time ago.
