No need to be ashamed Doc, practice makes perfect. Just get a platform to keep the lens stable, enough light to keep the shutter speed up and most importantly: learn to SILENTLY stalk your pray, which is my biggest nemesis

That was a good find caporip, and photo, I see there are currently only an estimated 263 Takahe in NZ, coming back slowly now after almost going extinct.
It looks strikingly similar to the Purple Swamp Hen in general style but heavier all over, I wonder when they diverged and how? Apparently it was already in place even before Polynesian entry so it’s been there for a long time, it was there even before the end of the last Ice Age.
Ah, I since found another article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pukeko and there is apparently some kind of connection and re-introduction of the Purple Swamp Hen (locally called Pukeko) at a later time possibly less than a thousand years ago, while the original was estimated to be more than a million years ago. Which then evolved into the Takahe, apparently.
