When we were first married, we took two honeymoons, one RIGHT after the wedding, to Stillwater and Duluth..and then another the following winter to Mexico.
Duluth has since, remained one of our favorite towns...on the western most tip of Lake Superior, it is an artsy college type town that has never forgotten it's old Iron Town roots. I have a friend from Portland, who calls Duluth "the Seattle of the midwest".
Duluth is on Lake Superior, the largest, coldest, and deepest of all the great lakes. If Lake Superior was drained, it contains enough water to supply every man/woman and child on the planet with almost 500,000 gallons of water. If it was drained, it would COVER ALL OF NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA WITH A FOOT OF WATER. It has a depth of 1333 feet, and only the areas around the shoreline ever get warmer than about 40 degrees. Lots of King Salmon in these waters. Lake Superior is also responsible for more shipwrecks than any other freshwater body..the most famous and recent being the massive Iron ore ship the "Edmund Fitzgerald" which sank in 1975 and was immortalized in song.
Duluth is also at the base of a mountain. Yes, Minnesota has a mountain range....albeit nothing like the rockies, they are technically considered small mountains, and the range is known as the Iron Mountain range. When you drive into Duluth, you will come over a hill and see a sign warning of several miles of a 6% grade decline.....not a big deal in the summer....in the winter...for semi's.....it can be a VERY big deal.
Duluth is also home to the nationally famous "Grandma's Marathon", sponsored by the restaurant, and long dog sled race, that while not the iditarod, still an impressive race.
AND finally, I did manage to catch a bald eagle, but we were on a boat that was moving kind of fast, so it's not the greatest shot, and is pretty soft. I wish I would have had more time to compose and capture the shot....but that's how it goes sometimes.
