I guess iron is common enough around here. If they were full of copper then the copper thieves would have probably stripped them a long time ago.

The Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona a few days ago.



There are a few of these on the rim of the canyon. They were installed in 1922. It is just a hollow tube and there are notches of various depths that allow you to point the tube in various directions and various angles to look through. Each notch is labeled with the name of a rock formation.



Lookout Studio was constructed by the Santa Fe Railway in 1914 and was established as a photography studio.

I was out at Red Rock Canyon in the Mojave Desert, Nevada again today. Nice day, nice weather.

It sure is a great place for dramatic rock formations Henry. Question without notice, is that photo with the brass tube rock spotter for real? with a 1000ft drop right beside the thing with no guard rail?

There is a rock wall that is about waist height and then there is a rock platform on top of that with this contraption. Here is another view of the device:

The middle one does it for me. I'd have thought having the barn straight on would have made a less interesting picture but i think it reLly works. Perhaps it's the winding track next to it. Great B&W conversion.

Hi Bakubo,

Utah and Northern Arizona look very appetizing with such shapes and colours for the right kind of traveller. The lanad formations and the layers are almost too chic and fashionable, reminding me of fluffy huge skirts made with custom-design and colour textiles by a special designer. No wonder Vogue actually makes a habit of taking its photographers to these parts for some of the season's new designs. The backdrop would be very enticing and just as inspiring. (Make any sense? The editor-in-chief actually does that.. )

Hi Caporip,

The barn appears different in each photo. I think you used the surrounding muddy elements and puddles to match the confused state of the dramatic clouds in the last and the second is a study of the B&W conversion and textures. The first becomes gloomy with the colours that reveal the real conditions of the shooting moment.

I won't prefer one to the other for the reasons above.

Still going through the Isle of Skye trip photos. We were just out for a walk (between torrential down-pours) and I liked the look of this little waterfall. I had the Next 6 with 16-50, and use a polariser to get some slower speeds and cut down water glare.

The waterfall and its flow is beautiful. The photo actually kindled a will to drink a fresh, cool glass of water at my end. : )

Is it actually safe to scoop some water from this waterfall and drink? I would be tempted to do so if I were standing in your shoes in that moment : )
