Toni,
Not really. :D I guess I should have been clearer. I was looking for quantifying answer for "certain".
Your categorization of "certain photographer" is qualitative, IMHO. It does not say what kind of photographer
is that one? E.g. portrait? landscape? abstract? experimental?
The analogy:
1) Zoom lenses are useful for certain photographers. - qualifying statement
2) After using Tamron200-500 lens, I can say this (type of, range of ...) lens is highly suitable for birders because
of the reach, but not for sports photographers shooting indoors due to its speed or lack thereof. - more quantifying statement.
After your month long experimentation with lensbaby optics, I was hoping for a quantifying observation. Since it your
blog, I was hoping for, but not I was looking for, that observation.

No harm done Sury, I'm just trying to understand what kind of knowledge are you looking for and to what interest. You know, there is a reason why I haven't used 'the-much-used-categorization of different photography genres' like potrait, landscape, macro, nature, sport etc. which one will find in every photography 101 book. I have actually tried to avoid it the whole time I have been doing my blog and I have not built any season around any of those categories (it would be obvious first thought to have season of landscape, season potraits, etc). The reason is that I think these categories, however how useful they feel, limit the imagination of any photographer. In my mind they are way too dry and technical, and any serious photographer would never describe their work with these terms, and you never see photography exhibitions described this way either. To me, photography is always about the message behind the photograph, not about the category it might fit in 101 text book. Yes, a great photograph might be 'a landscape picture', but people don't talk about it because it is a landscape. In short, I don't believe these categories are useful.

When it comes to Lensbaby, I feel it would be intellectually dishonest to put them into some certain category. For example, I recommended them to Chris, who does black ethereal landscapes, they would fit to his style. Some people use Lensbaby for macro photography. Some use them for potrait photography. In future I will use them to photograph Aura, since I think, for me, they will work very nicely photographing children (as long as Aura can stay still). But as you see, there is no some certain category for which they are designed for - it's more about what kind of photographer one is. If one is point and shoot kind of guy, it will be difficult to get best out of Lensbaby because it takes some effort. If one is looking for distinctive look with some kind of vision in one's mind, it might be good idea to check them out. To me, that's the best way to describe them really.

Toni,
Thanks for the clarification. That makes it clear for me. I am with you in terms of not binning
into some standard categories and I was looking for the genre where you could use
based on your experience. Your explanation makes it clear that one does not need to limit the
usage to certain genres of photography.

Ok, I see it better now. Thanks for the clarification. You know, even if I haven't used Lensbaby much for potraits (I have not have best possible circumstances for that), I feel I'm a 'people person'. I would have loved to use Lensbaby more with people, but it turned out that I was pretty tied into work during this season (and doing people photography asks for certain effort for arranging things). I will defineatly continue to use Lensbaby outside of my blog and maybe I'll get a change to post some pictures later. I like the out-of-focus look a lot (when I get it to work!) and like I said earlier I think I could make it work with Aura. With that look I feel it should be possible to create very nice childhood pictures with a sense of time, subjectivity, memories and all. I hope. :D

Season of Tilt
Week 20, Wednesday - The Violence
"In one summer night when I was alone at the streets bunch of them found me and tried to beat me. I escaped from their first attack and run as fast as I could, but there were too many of them and they succeeded exhausting me. I had run through couple of streets and town square when they finally drag me down like a prey at one street corner and gasping my breath I wasn't much of resistance. [...]"

Season of Tilt
Week 20, Saturday - Constructions of the mind
"With these last photographs I've explored my life within a framework one could call 'wretchedness of life'. Using nature as a symbol of Hobbesian idea of the war of all against all (bellum omnium contra omnes), I wanted to create a discourse that self-purposely portraits my personal memories and feelings in a somewhat nihilistic light that has little faith for humanity. I wanted to create this discourse of mans subordination to nature just that I could tear it down at the end. Because the thing is that the truth about the world and life is what people believe it is and [...]"

Next week Wednesday I will start a new season with new photography. I can't say much about it yet, other than it will have a different mood altogether. Stay tuned..

Season of Summer Light
Week 21, Wednesday - Introducing the third season
"Today I'm starting my third season at Year of the Alpha. Like earlier seasons this one also carries a special theme in which I will concentrate for next ten weeks. While my earlier seasons have dealt with blackness and personal memories, in this one I will concentrate on summer photography and my beautiful two year old daughter Aura. The reasons are simple. First of all, it's summer in Finland and because we live so top at the northern hemisphere it's only couple of months when we have plentifully of warmth and light. Therefore every summer is [...]"

Toni,
That is a big shift in your point of view where you ended the last season with I quote "I wanted to create a discourse that self-purposely portraits my personal memories and feelings in a somewhat nihilistic light that has little faith for humanity." and you are starting the next one with beautiful Aura who personifies innocence and thereby faith in humanity.
Enjoyed your last season exploration and thank you for sharing your feelings and memories in a creative way. Look forward to the next season with as much anticipation.

Thanks guys for the kind words! :D Regarding the shift, it has been my intention from the start to wear 'different hat' in every season. I was not fully happy with a shift between first and second season (too similar), but this one came out pretty well. I just need to find a way to continue it from here..

Season of Summer Light
Week 21, Saturday - Tree Climbing
"One of the great things in family life are summers. From the day your first child is born every summer is very different from others because of different age, skills and plays. In last summer, when Aura was one year old, we spent quite a lot time at the sandbox making sand cakes, castles and all sort of that. While she still likes to do all that, this summer has already started very differently. Aura has developed a pretty strong urge for climbing and you would be surprised to see much there are possibilities for it everywhere we go. [...]"

That is a lovely shot Toni. My first reaction was "oh my god, what if she falls" and then
I relaxed. That's what children do and that is what children enjoy too. The pure joy in
her face is priceless. Any day beats cooped up inside the home and worse yet hooked on
to electronic gadgets. I fondly remember my Summers too and Winters, and Autumns and
Springs. Family spending time together is an all season activity. :)

I like the shot of the child in the tree, great clarity and dof, climbing is good I think even if slightly risky, it enhances agility coordination and strength and encourages a bit of self-preservation…at some point. It’s a pity the nice conditions you have at the moment don’t extend for a longer period of the year, the lighting looks great for photography right now.

About electronic gadgets, I totally agree with you. Many families here have all sort of pads, phones, enterteinment systems, consoles etc etc. And while it's nice to have something, I see lot of little kids playing with them and their proud parents encouraging them. It's kind of paradoxal to think TV is bad, but iPad is great. Too much either of them and kids (with their parent) enter into zones of alienation..
