An experiment

Andy's comment about CZ135 having a sharp point falling off to nice bokeh triggered
an idea and I decided to run with it. So I took my macro slider (X-Z axes) and mounted
my A700 with CZ135 on it (Y-axis) and using the macro slider took multiple shots at f1.8, autofocus,
and in A mode. Stitched them in MS ICE and tweaked in LR. The idea was to "expand" the sharp
area in X-Y direction while retaining the bokeh. Here are the results. Any suggestions, ideas etc
are much appreciated.

First experiment: I was moving in very small increment. Though this is a stitch of 39 images, I think most of it is overlapping.


Another try. With 23 images.


This is perhaps the best of the lot today. 6 images.

Well the photos look beautiful but you lost me with all those X & Y & Z's.

Thank you and apologies as well.

I should have been clearer. X-axis movement is left to right, Y-axis is up and down and Z-axis is towards the flowers or away from them (changing distance between camera and subject). I have a macro slider that allows me to move the camera left to right, and towards the subject or away from it. This slider is mounted on a tripod and tripod allows me to increase or decrease the distance between camera and ground.

Essentially 135f1.8 has a sharp central area. Say a small rectangle around center. My thinking was to step through left to right, like a pano and capture sharp small rectangles and using pano stitch to get a larger rectangle of sharpness. To reduce the effective focal length and also make a lower "effective" aperture. I know pano stitch will give me the smaller effective focal length, but not sure about aperture.
It was a crazy idea and thought will put it out there so that experts can set me straight.

Cool! Thanks' for the in-depth explanation. Now I understand what you were doing. I have one of those sliders also ( not sure what the official name of it is ) that I've used to focus on inner flowers but that it all. Buy the looks of you're photos I think you may have succeeded with your experiment.
