Very much so. I use flash WB and the sun becomes a warm, diffused second light, while the flash becomes my main. If I overpower the sun too much, at worst the underexposed surroundings make it look like they're in front of a backdrop, but then there's no denying that they're interacting with the environment. It's very relaxed and full of pleasant surprises. Waiting for the flash to recharge, listening for that characteristic whine, lets my subjects have a periodic moment to rest their smiles and start little casual interactions, which I promptly capture

Since I'm painting with the light anyway, the viewfinder image matters very little (getting back on topic)--I could do it with the camera on a tripod and a cable release if I was confident of the composition and background. But again, I could not do it without that broad range of usable flash sync speeds.
