My recommendations for the Lakes is to get off the beaten track and visit some of the smaller lakes as well - like 'Tarn Hows' which was a favourite haunt when I was a child. Lots of trees to climb, frogs to watch and an island you can paddle to
I find Ambleside pretty horrendous unless you like taking shots of architecture/people or enjoy shopping at high prices! (Unless it's the sales ) Only IMHO of course. Some people love that sort of thing and that's their prerogative.

Hopefully it's not changed much since I was last there 40 odd years ago, or that the magic was due to my tender years

There is now a full circular walk suitable for wheelchairs all the way round the tarn.

We like Keswick, mainly walkers etc and the cornish pasty shop is great.
You'd get new wet weather gear there for sure

Light and the sky are amazing in the third, the ducks in the second and the tiny island of trees in the first make the wonderful scenes a little 'more' lively.
